Tokoroa Pools: A Facility Worth Fighting For

The Tokoroa Pools have been a part of our community for decades, a place where tamariki learn to swim, whānau cool off in summer, and generations have made memories. But the truth is, the facility was hanging by a thread. It was outdated, worn out, and fast becoming unsafe.
When I became Mayor, one thing was clear: if we didn’t act, we risked losing the pools altogether.
So, we committed to the hard mahi, and now, a $17 million upgrade is officially underway. It’s the biggest investment in the facility in its history, and it means we’re future-proofing something our community can’t afford to lose.
This Wasn’t Just a Nice-to-Have. It Was Urgent.
The upgrades were signalled in our 2024–34 Long Term Plan and are a direct response to years of underinvestment. It wasn’t a matter of wanting a fancy new pool, it was a matter of keeping the doors open at all.
It came down to this: shut the place down, or commit to a proper fix. We chose to invest.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, and while the temporary closure is a disruption, it’s a short-term pain for long-term gain.
What’s Being Upgraded
This isn’t a quick paint job, it’s a full-scale renewal that will make the facility safer, more user-friendly, and fit for purpose for years to come. Upgrades include:
A brand-new, energy-efficient filtration system
Larger pipes to improve water flow and turnover
Non-slip flooring throughout
A full HVAC system replacement
Acoustic ceiling panels for better sound control
New LED lighting
A full electrical system overhaul
Upgraded fire safety systems
A new splash pad for tamariki
Sauna and plunge pool for wellbeing and recovery
Additional family, disabled, and elderly changing rooms
More toilets and showers
A modern, welcoming entrance
A facelift to the outdoor area
A revamped external playground
Extra community rooms and party spaces
This work will deliver a safer, more accessible, and more enjoyable experience for everyone, whether you’re learning to swim, doing rehab, or just enjoying a day out with your whānau.
A Commitment to Community Wellbeing
We’ve designed this upgrade with our people in mind, young and old, active and recovering, competitive swimmers and casual splashers. It’s more than a pool. It’s a hub for health, recreation, and connection.
“We could’ve chosen the easy road and just shut it down. But that’s not leadership. I backed this project because our community deserves better, and when it’s finished, I know it’ll be something we’re all proud of.”
This project is just one part of a bigger picture, a South Waikato that invests in itself, plans for the future, and makes sure no community is left behind.
